Is there a connection between bisphosphonates and leg fractures?

USA Today and Good Morning download Windows 7America are among the media reporting that patients who are on long term bisphosphonate treatment for osteoporosis are having atypical subtrocanteric fractures. The FDA has weighed in and concluded that there is “not a clear connection.” ASBMR has established a task force to review the data and get someanswers for us.
American Bone Health is monitoring the scientific discussions about this issue and will post updates as they are available.
Meanwhile, what can you tell your patients?
If your patients are taking a bisphosphonate, talk with them.
There is very consistent and strong evidence that osteoporosis treatments decrease the risk of fractures by 30-70% in postmenopausal women who have osteoporosis (very low bone density or previous spine fractures). In patients at high risk of fracture, the benefits of taking a drug are clearly far greater than the possible risks. However, the benefit of these download Windows 7drugs for women who do not have osteoporosis is less. As always, help your patients balance out the risks and benefits of any treatment.
